Previous considerations
Wine does not have to be necessarily stored in darkness; however, wines should not be stored in places where direct sunlight can affect it. Also, the role of corks is very important. They need a minimum level of humidity: not too high, not too low. With some humidity, they can dry out and mold can be a huge problem if it is too humid. It’s important to know that an air conditioning system can de-humidify as well as cool, so, for this reason, it’s a good idea to have one in case you don’t have a separate temperature and/or humidity controlled place, in order to keep a lengthy wine storage.- As some of you have noticed before, bottles are stored on their sides. This is because they need to keep the liquid up against the cork, which, in theory, should keep the cork from drying out. However, this is not necessary if you are planning on drinking these bottles in the near term, or if your bottles have closures such as screw caps, plastic or glass corks. Finally, and despite the bottles you may have, horizontal racking is the most efficient way to store your bottles, and it won’t definitely harm your wines.
- As we said before, humidity is super important here. It is advised that humidity does not exceed 70%. If the humidity is too high, you would be creating the perfect environment for mold to grow and this will damage and destroy the wine labels.
- In case you don’t have a cool basement to store your wines, try looking for a location not directly in line with light pouring in from a window. Also, you could buy a small wine cooler and follow the same rule: keep your wine fridge in a cool place.
